Qiu Zhijie’s Map of the History of Science and Technology at Olympic Sculpture Park

How do we map technological forms? How do we date inventions? What does an “unmediated” experience of an artwork entail? Go visit Qiu Zhijie’s massive new mural, Map of the History of Science and Technology, at

Olympic Sculpture Park’s Paccar Pavillion
Open daily, 9 am to 4 pm

Information about the mural here

Although the park as a whole is open daily from sunrise to sunset, Qiu’s mural appears inside the Paccar Pavilion, which is only open until 4pm. As long as you are there, we also highly recommend visiting Mark Dion’s Neukom Vivarium, another work that puts science and technology at its center. For interested visitors, the park runs free, one-hour tours every Saturday at 1pm starting in Paccar Pavilion.

Pairs well with: lessons on the “standard view” of technology; Benjamin’s work on art, aura, and technological reproduction; lessons on experience and attention

For 25 extra credit points, take a selfie in front of Qiu’s mural and write about your experience viewing it in light of the following questions: how does the mural narrate the history of technology? Does Qiu’s account repeat or avoid the “Standard View” of technology we learned about in Week 1 of the course? Also, what was it like to view this work in person specifically, as opposed to viewing images of it online?
